Historical Note: Bertram Lewin was in training analysis with Franz Alexander in Berlin in 1920s. After the war he published a conclusive for his investigatins work, namely The Psychoanalysis of Elationl (1951). There he stressed the role in denial in mania -- denial particularly of feelings of separation and loss. He also explored the paradox in elation's counterpart, depression, wherby the melancholic in seeking to punish the effigy of their loved one actually punishes themselves having incorporated this effigy.
