Abstract

This Collections comprises periodicals published by the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Society and Institute in 1960s -- 1990s.

The publication, entitled Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Bulletin, reflected psychoanalytic discourse and reviews related to the activities of this Organization, as well as the sister-organizations. Overall the Bulletin was published quarterly.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Bulletin authorship and editorial board attempted and often implemented to present  a high level of scholarly discourse in the Science of Psychoanalysis. The particular emphasis was given to the psychoanalytic discourse in Los Angeles, as well as on the analysis of other national and international sources. The editors intentions were to consider the papers related to theoretical and applied Psychoanalysis and reviews of psychoanalytic literature.

Collection Historical Note

Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Society and Institute established in defiance to the Split in the Psychoanalytic Society and ensued emphatically and hastily created the Institute of Medical Psychoanalysis. This organization by its very name was determined to the medical prevalence in Psychoanalysis. In other words, the social component, so far dominated in the Freudian School of Psychoanalysis, had been modified to a rather practical or practitioners’ approach, reifying de facto the therapeutic prevalence in Psychoanalysis.

Those who remained still dedicated to the traditional values of Psychoanalysis as a Theory and Social Science re-established an organization under the name Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Institute and Society, keeping the Psychoanalytic Group, the former core of the Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles, an independent entity.

The Manifesto of the new Organization came out on March 3, 1950. It was entitled as follows, Statement for the Candidates Meeting. This document had laid the principles of the Psychoanalytic Institution emanated from the Freudian tenants of a broader psychoanalytic discourse.

This Statement also reflected on the imminent split between the proponents of practical, de facto, therapeutic Psychoanalysis and those who still believed in Psychoanalysis as a premise of a Social Science and would not persist on separation non-medical scholars from practicing psychoanalytic training and therapy.

The tenets of disagreements were also statement in this document. The discourse goes as follows. Working together for three and a half years has failed to diminish the disagreement on principles, but has  made the maintenance of training standards more difficult. It was reluctantly agreed that only the formation of a new Institute would make  it possible to maintain the high standards of psychoanalytic teaching and practice.

There is no doubt that personality factors are interwoven with the scientific differences  which does add to the incompatibility.

It is believed that the formation of two separate institutes will make possible a more cordial scientific atmosphere, since it will do away with much of the latent hostility that existed until now.

The Institute made strides in the 1950s, the Greenson curriculum revision, the Van Der Heide and McGuire curriculum were well worked out.

With regard to the reorganization of the Institute and Society, we shall refer to Dr. Maimon Leavitt’s recollections.

In 1963, the Institute was attempting to implement certain changes in the bylaws to improve the organization, but could not effectively accomplish this.

The publication of the Bulletin of the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Society and Institute commenced in 1964

In late 1963 and early 1964, Dr. Friedman submitted a detailed plan for reorganizing the Training School, but this was not acted upon. Since then the Society, Institute, Training School and a number of committees and sub-committees deliberated the variants of reorganization on the modified and new premises of functioning. The principle organizational premise was adopted with regard to a single organization rather than two.

These were difficult times. The antagonism became as intense as before the Split.

The reorganization of 1965 –1967 was designed to contend with problems of the 1950s. However, However the multi-vectorial discourse of the new trends in Psychoanalysis and Metapsychology again caused a divisive state of affairs resultant in ineffectiveness in scholarly and organizational dealings.

In January 1976, a group of 17 analysts of classic persuasion decided to declare independence. In utter frustration, no longer hopeful of resolving the issues of their own effort they petitioned American Psychoanalytic Association for the right to begin the process of establishing a new Institute of their own.

By the beginning of the 1980s the divisive obstacle had been overcome by evolution of the competitive ideologies and the Time has become favorable factor for the new integration.

It is worth noting some remarkable landmarks in the painful discourse exerted by ideological differences and theoretical trajectories. For example, any departure from what could be regarded as mainstream Freudian theory was viewed with particular suspicion in the 1950s.

The Kleinian situation created quite a stir within the psychoanalytic milieu of the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Perhaps it was partially owned by the state of theoretical affairs, namely the American Ego Psychology was away from the dimension from uncanny, away from certain emphases on the unconscious. As the Ego Psychology becomes important and sets  the tone for much of the discussion in the 1950s and early 1960s, then the Kleinian ideas seem very regressive in certain ways.

Perhaps it was a pragmatic imposition of mundane occurrences, an American scientific, but pragmatic and funding-oriented milieu, that the former ideologically incompatible grouping gave place to the integration effort that eventuated in the current institutional setting.
